SUBHASH CHNDRA GOEL- Rice Trader Turned Media Mogul


Subhash Chandra was born on 30 November 1950 in Hisar, Haryana. He left studies after completing 12th.(Not a point to be highlighted as it may send wrong signal to youth and society at large) He went on to start his own vegetable oil unit when he was only nineteen years old and soon ventured in to export of food grains. In 1981, his visit to a packaging exhibition led him to set up Essel Packaging Ltd. Later it was merged with the Swiss Group Propack A.G., and was renamed as Essel Propack Ltd. Later a casual visit to a friend at Doordarshan gave him the idea of starting his own broadcasting company.


Chandra knew nothing about programming, distribution or film rights. What he did understand quite well was the Indian sensibility though. Funded by UK businessman, Zee came into being as India’s first satellite TV network on 2nd October 1992. Zee TV competes with, among others, Sony Entertainment Television and STAR Plus. It made news when it forged a distribution partnership with Rupert Murdoch’s Star DEN, a one time partner. Group’s Dish TV, which has over 12 million subscribers, is now his second biggest asset. Zee TV also launched regional channels in several regional languages. Today, the Zee Network reaches out to 32 million homes across India, besides reaching out to countries like USA, the  Caribbean Islands, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Far East, Australia and New Zealand.

Chandra has also set up amusement parks in India. He is also credited with bringing the concept of online lottery to India through his company Playwin Infravest Private Ltd. He started the failed Indian Cricket League, a domestic Twenty 20 cricket league. In November 2009, he took over management responsibility of Daily News and Analysis (DNA), which is one of the fastest growing newspapers in India. He is having interests in movie production, multiplexes, education and animation too.

TALEEM Research Foundation was set up by Chandra in May 1996.Chandra is the President of Global Vipasana Foundation

Chandra is the Chairman of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of India. He is also the founder Chairman of the Global Foundation for Civilization Harmony, an interfaith.

He won an International Emmy Directorate Award for 2011.

His Net Worth as March 2012 is $ 1.8 B. In the Forbes Billionaires he is # 29 in India.
