Naushad Ali studied hindustani music at Barabanki  under Ustad Ghurbat Ali, Ustad Yusuf Ali, Ustad Babban Saheb and others. He was also repairing harmoniums there. While giving music for silent movies he grasped the naunces required in composing a film's background music score. Later, he  took training under Laddan Khan until he became capable of working independently as a composer. There also he developed the sense to pick rare musical jewels from folk tradition of Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Saurashtra. His family was strict follower of Islamic diktat of prohibition of music. He preferred music to family and left the family and ran away to Bombay.

He composed for his first independent film Prem Nagar in 1940 but it was Rattan (1944) that took him to the top and enabled him to charge Rs.25000 a film then. When Naushad got married, the band was playing the tunes of the super hit songs of Rattam.

He was one of the first to introduce sound mixing and the separate recording of voice and music in playback singing. He was first to combine the flute and clarinet, the sitar and mandolin. He also introduced the accordion  and first to concentrate on background music. But perhaps his greatest contribution was to bring Indian Classical Music in to the film medium. He even used distinguished classical artistes like Amir Khan, D.V. paluskar and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Pandit Jasraj has compared Naushad  with his father-in-law Dr. V. Shantaram. Naushad said once" My country is not so poor that I have to go begging and foraging for western music.

From 1942 to 1960 Naushad was one of the top music directors in Bollywood. He composed music for nearly 64 films.
